Quintessential for Woodwind Quintet
World premiere of "Quintessential" by the Ayorama Quintet. January 2025.
I am excited to share my piece “quintessential” with you all tonight!
One of the most enjoyable things about writing this piece was adding intentional mistakes.
The name itself is an obvious pun on quintet to get you into the humour of it. But the word quintessential has a deeper meaning. Quintessential means to represent the perfect example of something. I wanted to explore my own meaning of the word quintessential with this piece.
Quintessential begins with all parts in unison. Later on, all of the parts play the original tune but out of sync. The piece does return to unison of the main theme near the end, but right as you expect a nice resolved ending, I threw in this heavily dissonant chord that doesn’t really make any “sense” musically.
Which is where my meaning comes in, “quintessential” doesn’t have to mean perfection. Life is unpredictable, even the best laid plans experience failure. To me, the quintessential person is the one who takes everything that life throws their way and somehow finds a way to make it work. As you listen I hope you experience the same sense of humour, meaning and enjoyment that I did when I was composing it. Thank you!
